The Thai Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of sildenafil citrate (SFA) as an erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
“In Thailand, we’re seeing an increase in the number of people who are using ED treatments and the need to provide them with the necessary information about this treatment,” said Dr. Sharmit Mokhin, the medical director of the Medicines and Health Products Administration (MHPA) in Bangkok.
“So far this year, there have been a number of reports of people using ED treatments and this is a concern because some people may not be using the treatment for erectile dysfunction,” Mokhin said.
“Some of the cases we have received have been from people who are not currently using their ED treatment, which is why we are requiring the FDA to conduct a thorough investigation to see if they are a likely candidate to be prescribed ED treatment.”
The FDA has not yet issued a decision on the use of SFA, and so the use of sildenafil is not expected to be approved by the FDA.
According to the FDA, “Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, which means it increases blood flow to the penis.” This means men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction should not take this medication.
“This medicine will not cause an erection but can help relax the blood vessels in the penis. It can also increase blood flow to the penis,” Mokhin said.
“However, there are some side effects that patients should be aware of. These include an increased frequency of erections, headaches and visual disturbances,” Mokhin said.
“Some men may also experience a change in hearing or vision, which may increase with the amount of sildenafil used,” he added.
Pfizer’s new Viagra-like drugThe FDA has approved Pfizer’s first-ever new ED treatment for the United States and Australia, Viagra.
The drug, known as sildenafil citrate, was originally developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction but has since been used for other ED treatments such as blood pressure and hair loss, he said.
In Australia, the drug was approved as a treatment for high blood pressure. But the FDA has not yet approved the use of Viagra for erectile dysfunction, so there are not yet a lot of studies on the use of the drug in the United States.
Treatment for ED in Thailand:“We don’t currently recommend using sildenafil citrate as a treatment for ED in Thailand because it could cause a serious drop in blood pressure,” Mokhin said.
“In Thailand, we’re seeing an increase in the number of people who are using ED treatments and the need to provide them with the necessary information about this treatment.”
“We’re still working with the manufacturer to determine if we should continue to use the medication to treat erectile dysfunction,” Mokhin said.
In Australia, it is available as an oral tablet and a nasal spray, he said.
According to the FDA, “the use of sildenafil is not expected to be approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED in Australia,” but so far, “it is not known if it would be approved by the FDA in this country.”
A study published in the International Journal of Sexual Medicine found that “the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in male patients with ED were not established.”
The study was conducted in four states, including New Zealand, New York, Texas and California.
“While some patients experienced a drop in blood pressure during treatment with Viagra or Viagra-like tablets, no significant adverse events were reported in these patients.”
However, “there is some evidence that the drug could also cause a reduction in the frequency and severity of erections in patients taking nitrate drugs,” Mokhin said.
According to the American Urological Association, “ED has been linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.
The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.
“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”
Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.
The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.
“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”
More than $1.3 in financial aidThe MHRA is the biggest money- IPO in history and is driven by the real estate and real property businesses that make up the broader community’s money-generating assets. The money-making system uses name-brand products to help make things more expensive. For example, if a product is a 'Zantac’, it is usually a generic called sildenafil. On the name-brand, therapies are often identical to their brand-name counterparts in appearance, form, use and quantity.
